With some shoppers aiming to make fewer trips into stores and more retailers offering in-store and curbside pickup, options are growing at a record pace in popularity and sales at Target and Walmart.
As part of its quarterly earnings Wednesday, Target CEO Brian Cornell said its Drive Up curbside pickup grew an “astonishing 730%” over the same quarter in 2019. Its Shipt online delivery service grew more than 350% year-over-year.
Americans have turned to online shopping more since the start of the pandemic with digital sales growing 195% at Target and 97% at Walmart in the second quarter.

Since the pandemic, Best Buy, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Old Navy and Signet Jewelers have added curbside service allowing consumers to pickup orders without leaving the car. On Wednesday, Tailored Brands adds buy-online-pickup-in-store orders, which includes curbside, at hundreds of Men’s Wearhouse and Jos A Bank stores.
Sam’s Club added curbside pickup to stores, and Aldi added the service to 600 stores by the end of July.
At Target, orders are typically available within a few hours, and there’s no minimum order required for free pickup. Walmart, which recently combined its grocery app with its main app to allow consumers to shop for items in multiple departments, has a $35 minimum for free curbside pickup.
